The Best Cafes, Confiterias, & Tea Spots
Café Tortoni, Buenos Aires (tel. 11/4342-4328): This historic cafe
has served as the artistic and intellectual capital of Buenos Aires since
1858, serving personalities like Jorge Luis Borges, Julio de Caro, Cátulo
Castillo, and José Gobello. Come here to glimpse the history, sip
a coffee, or even catch an evening tango performance in the Tortoni's
back room.
Petit Paris Café, Buenos Aires (tel. 11/4312-5885): The Petit Paris
offers marble-top tables with velvet upholstered chairs, crystal chandeliers,
and bow tie-clad waiters. Large windows look directly on to Plaza San
Martín, placing the cafe within short walking distance of some
of the city's best sights.
Plaza Dorrego Bar, Buenos Aires (tel. 11/4361-0141): Representative of
a typical Porteño bar from the 19th century, Plaza Dorrego proudly
displays portraits of Carlos Gardel, antique liquor bottles stored in
cases along the walls, and anonymous writings engraved in the wood. Stop
by during the day on Sunday, when you can also catch the colorful San
Telmo antiques market on the plaza in front.
Café Arrayán, San Martín de los Andes (tel. 02972/425570):
A short cab ride takes you high up to this 70-year-old wooden home, now
the site of daily afternoon teas that serve traditional sandwiches, cakes,
and pastries amid scenic mountain and lake views.
The Best Dining Experiences
Cabaña las Lilas, Buenos Aires (tel. 11/4313-1336): Widely considered
the best parrilla in Buenos Aires, Cabaña las Lilas is always
packed. The menu pays homage to Argentine beef cuts, which come exclusively
from the restaurant's private estancia (ranch). The steaks are
outstanding. Catalinas, Buenos Aires (tel. 11/4313-0182): This is without
doubt the best international restaurant in Buenos Aires, its kitchen
a model of culinary diversity and innovation. In addition to Chef Pardo's
enormous Patagonian toothfish steaks, his grilled lamb chops--sprinkled
with rosemary and fresh savory--are famous throughout Argentina. De
Olivas i Lustres, Buenos Aires (tel. 11/4405-2714 or 11/4867-3388):
This magical restaurant in Old Palermo serves Mediterranean cuisine
in a small, rustic dining room where antiques, olive jars, and wine
bottles are on display. Each candlelit table is individually decorated--one
resembles a writer's desk, another is sprinkled with seashells. Check this thread about pubs in Buenos Aires.
