Sacred Art Room
CAPITAL CITY - SANTIAGO DEL ESTERO The ALEJANDRO GANCEDO "SACRED ART ROOM"
can be found at the HISTORICAL MUSEUM of the SANTIAGO DEL ESTERO City.
At the entrance, the first surprise we meet is the MATARA CHAPEL altarpiece.
Altarpieces of great artistic value existed in our churches as from the
beginning of the XVII century, most of which have already disappeared.
The above-mentioned one is of Baroque Style, constituting a real representative
of the Peruvian-Highland influence. It shows a vigorous ornamentation
composed of winged angels, leaves and wreathed columns. Subjects, no longer
used in EUROPE, are still applied, thus granting our colonial works that
characteristic primitive taste that makes them so attractive.
Besides, the JESUITIC LIBRARY donated by ALEJANDRO GANCEDO where you can
find incunabular books of years 1600 and 1700 is in this same room.
The RECUMBENT STATUE of CHRIST, brought from MATARA is an example of what
the department of MATARA meant for Culture. Both CHRISTS and the famous
MATARA CROSS, a copy of which is at the Santiago Cathedral, were mostly
carved by aborigines.
There is also a sculpture of TOBA origin that dates from the times when
some reductions arrived at SANTIAGO DEL ESTERO on occasion of the NATIONAL
ORGANIZATION process. Natives ran from one place to the other to save
their lives.
There also is a MIRACLE CHRIST originated in the all-of-a-sudden passage
of aborigines from POLYTHEISM (believing in the sun, the moon and the
earth) to MONOTHEISM. Consequently, they had no average perception of
things and even a HALF-NAKED GOD seems indecent to them, reason why they
cover him with clothes. The VITRAUX of this religious room date from the
beginning of the century as the depot of this house, of 1810 or 1820,
was located at this very place. You see, from depot to a religious room...
It is a good reason for visiting it.
