Plaza de Mayo - Madres de Plaza de Mayo
The oldest square in the city, which is landscaped with beautiful gardens
and palm trees. Here you will find the Piramide de Mayo, a monument to
commemorate the one year anniversary of the May Revolution in 1811. Along
the square there are several colonial buildings, such as Metropolitan
Cathedral, Casa Rosada (fort), Cabildo (town hall), and the Banco de la
Nación Argentina. Important historical events have taken place
here.
In May 1810, the citizens gathered when the first Patriotic Government
was declared. In 1945, the supporter of Perón first rallied to
ask the government for his release. The Mothers of Plaza de Mayo demonstrated
here from 1976 to 1983.
