The Brook`S Mouth
One of the most important trips when arriving to Buenos Aires is the La
Boca neighborhood, where you can find many peculiarities including one
that can even be unique in the world.
Among the first ones, we find the classical architecture of a port neighborhood
constituted by small wooden houses covered with zinc plates made, in many
cases with the same techniques employed for making a small boat.
In other cases, these were mounted on the house-on-stilts (riverside houses)
as installed in the original parcels, transported from one plot to the
other on board of special trucks.
The second peculiarity, unique in the world, is located at La Boca del
Riachuelo (Brook`s Mouth). Here we find two bridges, a few meters distance
one from the other, bearing the same name. The most interesting one is
the old Transporter Bridge, exclusively erected by the province of Buenos
Aires, despite the fact that it unites both Buenos Aires City (the Capital
of the Republic) and the Province of Buenos Aires.
The decree dated September 25th, 1908, authorized the South Railroad to
erect this huge iron bridge connecting the Capital City and the Province
by foot or by all kind of vehicles.
So, that monumental transporter was inaugurated "in front of a numerous
audience" on May 30th, 1914 under the name of Nicolas Avellaneda Bridge
accomplishing its purpose for many years.
But also the bridge in the back was named Avellaneda. It was erected in
the forties with the purpose of replacing the old transporter in its functions.
Thinking that it would not only replace the former but also relegate the
homage rendered to this great man, it was also baptized Nicolas Avellaneda
in his honor. So, La Boca has two bridges bearing the same name less than
two hundred meters distance one from the other.
