Southern Right Whale Natural Monument

Characteristics:
This is the sanctuary of the southern right whale, one of the scarcest cetaceans on the planet due to cruel commercial exploitation. Indirectly this protection is given to environments where the whale eats and reproduces. The right whale (eubalaena australis) has been one of the species closest to extinction. It is slow to move, and its high concentration of oil make the whale ideal to hunt.
Location: It is found in the waters of the Golfo Nuevo, in the Valdés Peninsula.

Main Accomodation Site: Puerto Madryn.

Points of Interest: Besides marveling at these giants, other animals worth checking out are the southern elephant seals (mirounga leonina), the sea lion (otaria elavescens), the killer whale (orcinus orca), the Magellan penguin (spheniscus magallanicus) at Punta Tombo, the Commerson´s dolphin (cephalorynchus commersonii)at Puerto Rawson and the great variety of marine bird fauna.

Activities: Observation of fauna, bird watching, scuba diving, jet skiing, sailing, horseback riding, and mountain biking.
