Tandil
Tandil is an Argentinean city, located in the southeast of Buenos Aires province. It's about 360 km away from the city of Buenos Aires.
Tandil is in the middle of a fertile valley surrounded by low hills of
the Tandilia system.
Tandil's name comes from two mapuche words: "Tan" (fallen) and "Lil" (rock),
which would mean "rock that falls", probably because of the balancing
rock which existed there. This giant rock, which balanced on top of a
hill, was famous worldwide and fell to the ground on February 29, 1912.
Tandil was founded on April 4, 1823 by Brigadier General Martín
Rodriguez in his fight against the indians who raided the area.
At the moment of its creation, Tandil had 400 citizens (the people who
had come with Martín Rodriguez), and today has become a city of
150000. This growth was bigger in certain years, like 1883 when the railroad
arrived, the opening of the stone quarries and the beginning of farming
and cattle breeding. Later on, it was the metallurgist industry which
opened new labor opportunities in the region. During the 70s, the opening
of the University had the same effect. Nowadays, what attracts new people
is the city's standard of living.
