Tinkunaco

TINKUNACO or Encounter is the party of the Baby Mayor celebrated in the province of La Rioja between December 31st and January 3rd. Felix Coluccio says that the image of the Baby Mayor was found at San Francisco Solano. On certain occasion, more than 20.000 aborigines overwhelmed by unbearable treatments menaced with destroying the city of La Rioja. Saint Francisco went to meet them playing his wonderful violin, and put the image in front of them. He got the warriors to calm down and venerate the image. As from that moment on, it was called The Baby Mayor.

The party has been held as from more than three hundred years. It starts on the same day Spanish authorities were replaced. Participants of this ceremony that congregates thousands of tourists and faithful people of the whole country, divide themselves between "alfereces" and "haylli".

On day 31st, one procession carries the Baby Jesus from the Saint Francisco Convent and another carries Saint Nicolas de Bari from the Cathedral. Both meet at noon, thus producing the "tinkunaco" or Encounter. Saint Nicolas makes three reverences to the Mayor of the World -the Baby Jesus- and the "haylli" sing their traditional song. Later on the Baby Mayor is taken to the Cathedral where he stays for three days. On January 3rd, in front of the Government Seat, Saint Nicolas says goodbye to the Baby Mayor. Its image is returned to the Saint Francisco Convent and the Saint Nicolas de Bari image is returned to the Cathedral.

Thus, this ceremony ends after congregating thousands of faithful people and tourists who, in addition to witnessing it, have enjoyed of the different varieties of turnover pies (empanadas) and other tidbits sold in the streets in front of the Church. Authorized stores also sell classical drinks such as Añapa (made by crushing crushed carob bean with water) and Aloja (made with water, honey and spices). An additional attraction are the horse races that, as a homage to Saint Nicolas, are performed by the "alfereces" in one of the avenues of the city.
