Penguins, Whales and Sea Lions - Peninsula Valdes
If you love nature and animals, you've come to the ideal spot. Here
is one of the few places in the world where you can observe -up close- the majestic
southern right whale, which swims in to the coast between June and September
to feed, and in passing, shows its affections and even falls in love and mates.
A soft breeze accompanies our little boat leaving from Puerto Pirámide,
bringing us almost face to face with the youngest and most curious, who welcome
us warmly.
We marvel at the pastel-colored horizon and surroundings while we hear the magical
sounds of the whales, which communicate in their own ancient language
amidst the orchestra of flora and fauna in the peninsula. The whales have many
neighbors sharing the same habitat. There are the sea lions and sea elephants,
which during a great part of the year stretch out their bodies and bask their
thick skins under the elements. At Tombo Point we get prepared to meet a quaint
little gentleman: the famous Magellan penguin, another great attraction of the
region.
Up above flying over us is a flock of marvelous birds, unique in this region
because of their grand variety. Soaring and dipping playfully, they duck the
clouds and head for the Isla de los Pájaros ("Bird Island") in San José
Gulf. In order to distinguish the gulls from the flamencos and the cormorants
from the herons, we peep out from the observation center with our large binoculars.
Do you love sport and wish to meld with nature? Maybe you'd just like to try a new sport? At Puerto Madryn and the surrounding area you can choose among a variety of activities,
including scuba diving, horseback riding, mountain biking, windsurfing and sand boarding.
Quite close to Port Madryn there is the Welsh town of Gaiman, which has
a lot of history. Put on your explorer's cap as we are going to unravel the
pale ontological richness of the region. Here we find the "Egidio Feruglio"
Pale ontological Museum (in Trelew), where we find unique exhibits, among which
are fossils dating back tens of millions of years. We can visit the Pale ontological
Park of Bryn Gwyn ("white hill"), where you can venture down the slopes to experience
40 million years of geological and biological history, marveling at samples
of the region's penguin, whale and other fossils
Every full day's adventure deserves a rest. Gaiman is renown for its teahouses
and delicious pastries. Don't miss out on one of these tasty delicacies...or
maybe two...or even three...
